Department Overview

The Department of Neurology and its affiliated practices comprise a multi-location interdisciplinary Neurology practice that include the following subspecialty groups that span over clinical and research efforts:

 

  • General Neurology – OHSU and Hillsboro Medical Center (HMC)
  • Residents Clinic (Continuity Clinic for Residents seeing General Neurology patients)
  • Layton Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Center
  • Neurology Wellness Clinic
  • ALS and Neuromuscular Disorders
  • Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
  • Headache Center
  • Multiple Sclerosis Clinic
  • Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Program
  • Oregon Stroke Center
  • Sleep Program

 

This position requires independent critical thinking, case management, engagement in transitions of care, and the ability to appropriately triage patients with complex medical problems. The RN must be able to work as a team with providers, nurses, medical assistants, schedulers, and all other disciplines as needed, and functions in a collaborative manner to ensure effective and timely communication with the patient, family, and other team members.

Function/Duties of Position

1.  Independent nursing practice

  • Direct and indirect patient care
  • Assess patient status and apply critical thinking skills and ability to independently, within your scope, perform nursing and and needs assessments, My Chart messages, phone calls and routed EPIC encounters
  • Nurse visits with and without a provider for case management, triage and patient education
  • Return calls to patients about lab/test results, answer medication and device questions
  • Take initiative to review patient charts before provider visits in preparation for patient assessment.
    • Work with medical assistants to set up labs and other tests prior to patient appointment
    • Meet with patients and present to provider
    • Be proactive and prepared

2. Tend to most patient care needs in between visits with the provider (phone calls and My Chart messages, etc.)

  • Utilize critical thinking skills to assess patient situations, to the best of RN ability based on knowledge transfer within nursing scope
  • Use templates for documentation

3. Be able to evaluate neurologic issues and understand the management goals and options

4. Assist with prior authorizations and FMLA paperwork as needed

5. Referral review as needed

  • Identify urgency of referral and triage as appropriate

6. Cross coverage of other neurology nurses as needed

7. Assist with clinical flow and rooming assessment as needed for break and lunch coverage, staffing shortages, and as directed by Nurse Manager

8. Comply with regulatory requirements and standards and OHSU policies and procedures

9. Program development and implementation

  • Engage in continuous process improvement
  • Maintain a willingness to embrace change with a positive attitude
  • Engage in workflow and documentation optimization and standardization
  • Actively participate in service excellence, including engaging with patients and their family to understand concerns and problem-solve resolutions

10. Communication

  • Effectively communicate to providers, patients and other staff as needed (Epic, Outlook, telephone, in person)
  • Be proficient in synthesizing patient information and summarize in a succinct, effective manner
  • Engage in positive, supportive verbal communication with patients, families, providers and support staff

11. Provide appropriate education to patients and their families

  • Provide education, counseling, information and support that is tailored to the patients' needs (medication, disease-specific advice, etc.)
  • Confirm patient synthesis of communicated information
  • Ensure that the patient and their family understand the plan of care recommended by the multidisciplinary team and that their questions are fully answered
    • Be able to bridge the patients' understanding and help form the team relationship for continuity of care
    • Schedule nurse visits as needed for additional patient education
    • Meet with provider at end of patient visits to discuss plan
    • Maintain an awareness of other OHSU resources to provide support and treatment for neurology patients and their families.

12. Responsible for knowledge of what may be delegated and what may not be delegated to MAs as determined by this scope of practice document and OHSU guidelines.

  • Guidance on appropriate tasks to delegate to the medical assistants
  • Positive resource and role-model for MA team

Required Qualifications

Qualifications:

The qualifications for the position are the minimum requirements to be eligible for an interview. 

 

Minimum Requirements for All RNs:

  • Associate Degree of Nursing awarded from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA).
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon RN license by 1 week before start date
  • Current, unencumbered Washington RN license by 1 week before start date
  • Current BLS certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA by the start date

Job Related knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.

Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools.

 

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • Current unencumbered Oregon RN license
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or the Military Training Network

Department Specific Preferences:

  • Advanced triage skills; telephone triage experience
  • Experience in an ambulatory clinic setting
  • Neuroscience Registered Nurse Certification (CNRN) or other applicable neurological or ambulatory advanced certification
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in a variety of collaborative settings
  • Demonstrated experience in patient and family education, including development of teaching materials
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Current competency with EPIC EMR

Preferred Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing preferred

Additional Details

Working Conditions: 

  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, reach, carry, push, pull and walk throughout the work period. Able to lift 35 lbs independently. Complies with the safe patient mobilization policy when lifting or positioning dependent patients, including using mechanical lifts and coordinating the assistance of other personnel.
  • Must be able to use all senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and speaking. Reasonable accommodations include corrective lenses and/or hearing aids.
  • The work environment carries risk of exposure to human tissue/fluids and radiation. 
  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers, including making correct judgments regarding ensuring safe conditions for patients, families, and other personnel.
  • Use of all hospital approved clinical equipment. Significant use of computers, copiers, multi-line phones, and fax.
