    The PMC RN completes telephone screenings and patient assessments in preparation for their anesthesia event.  The RN investigates, evaluates and makes recommendations based on a thorough chart review.   The goal of the phone visit is to provide a comprehensive review the patient’s medications, allergies, medical/surgical history, previous labs/tests and identify current medical issues/concerns that may need further evaluation/optimization prior to proceeding with surgery. The RN is responsible for patient education, providing pre-op instructions which include day of surgery medication plan. After reviewing this data with the patient the RN then populates the Review of Systems in Epic.  This position requires an RN with effective professional communication skills and ability to collaborate with licensed providers including PMC staff, surgeons and anesthesiologists.     This position reports to the Nurse Manager of the PMC and supports the mission and standards of care of OHSU, PMC, and the Peri Op Division. The RN will be held accountable to the ANA standards of Nursing Practice. The Registered Nurse is expected to make sound decisions both independently and inter-dependently, the ability to integrate evidence-based practice into day to day care of the pre-operative patient is crucial to optimal outcomes. The RN utilizes education and training to develop, coordinated and supervise implementation of the nursing process. It is within the Registered Nurse’s Scope of Practice to assess potential or actual patient health problems and consult with LIP as necessary to address responsibilities, and to seek consultation when indicated. The RN is responsible to complete initial and yearly education requirements as indicated on an organizational as well as unit-specific level.    All employees are expected to communicate in a respectful, caring and non- judgmental manner and to honor the cultural differences of diverse patient and employee populations. Members of the OHSU healthcare team constantly share knowledge between disciplines. Procedures and treatments provided in the PED include but are not limited to: placing venous access, portacath access, drawing bloodwork, medication, fluid and blood administration, radiography, extremity splinting and reduction, laceration repair, moderate and deep sedation, ultrasonography, intubation, cardioversion, pediatric sexual assault and abuse exams, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.  Patient population and diagnoses vary from minor to critical care and include: abdominal pain, extremity injuries and trauma, possible VP Shunt failure, overdose, seizure, dehydration, heart failure, respiratory distress, acute stroke, acute depression/psychological emergencies, neutropenic fever, sepsis, and other complex medical histories. The PED Team works determine if the patient requires admission or discharge with resources and referrals. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:5 based on the patients dynamic stability and acuity.
